Radiological Assessment,
Emergency Planning, and Radiation Surveys for Steel Mills
Work Description
– General:Chase
Environmental Group (Chase) was contracted by Industrial Safety
Consulting Services to perform on an continuing basis radiological
risk audits, baseline radiological assessments, emergency
planning, radiation safety officer training, and procedural
reviews at non-integrated steel mills throughout the Midwest
and Eastern United States as a precaution against inadvertent
melting of an undetected radioactivity in incoming scrap metals.
The scope of services performed by Chase includes detailed
radiation and contamination surveys of operational steel mills,
plotting results in AutoCad format for permanent archiving,
noting significant departures from unexpected results and
explaining probable causes, and compiling this information
into formats simple enough to use in the field if a radioactive
source was melted and contaminated the mill.
Emergency response planning expedites cleanup and recovery
of the mill if a radioactive source melts and contaminates
the mill. These plans utilize simple procedures and contain
systematic instructions, emergency contacts, pre-planned and
negotiated agreements with response contractors, and commitments
from disposal facilities to accept waste materials. These
plans are designed to eliminate unnecessary delays during
recovery operations.
